Loved this movie

For the record: this wonderful movie is mostly about Albert Barnes, his unique approach to displaying his astounding collection of art, and the superb new building that houses his collection. (Whoever wrote that blurb for PBS clearly did not watch the movie, because it's NOT about the collection itself.) Like the artists whose work he loved, Barnes was an original, and the movie shows the man as the irascible, canny visionary that he was. It's also a love letter to a brand-new building that succeeds in doing the impossible: it exactly replicates the idiosyncratic display from its original early 20th-century home, yet also provides state-of-the-art facilities for education, revolving exhibitions and so on. I loved hearing the architects get excited about the building's glowing natural light and the construction workers saying how proud they were to be part of something that will last for generations. And watching little kids walk through the finished building and respond to the art in a whole new way is worth the price of the DVD. Loved it!
Go to The Barnes, forget the DVD

As a documentary it is poor, as propaganda in support of the "new" Barnes it is pretty good. The narrative jumps from era to era without rhyme or reason. The story of Dr. Barnes and what he did is compelling, somebody should tell it.
