Edward Harley was born 21 October 1624 in Brampton Bryan Castle, Herefordshire, eldest surviving child of Sir Robert Harley (1579-1656), and his third wife Brilliana, Lady Harley (1598 -1643). He was one of seven children from this marriage, having two brothers and four sisters.
