Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has signed a one-year deal that is a mix of exclusive and non-exclusive library titles for the Pakistan market with streamer Begin. Backed by venture accelerator Z2C Limited, Begin is an SVOD platform that serves the Southwest Asian region, with licensed deals in live sports and entertainment. Chan made his name in martial-arts films in his native Hong Kong before establishing himself in Hollywood with 1995’s “Rumble in the Bronx” and then achieving global attention in the wildly popular “Rush Hour” films. As a far more complete filmmaker than is widely appreciated — he has co-directed, stunt-directed, financed or produced many of his 150 movies — Chan clearly deserved the honorary Oscar he received in 2017. He has leveraged that success to build a diverse business empire and obtain a degree of political power in China, but he might have alienated his original Hong Kong base. His latest efforts seem a bit repetitious: 2023’s “Ride On” saw him play a washed-up stuntman, while his next feature is a sequel to his 1995 hit, “The Myth.” Beyond that, Chan will join Ralph Macchio for a new “Karate Kid” film set for December 2024, long after both actors starred in separate installments of the franchise.
